Beyond Mindfulness: Explorations in Mind, Body, Emotion & Spirit

When we meet and greet our emotions, beliefs and memories directly we enter a doorway to self-knowledge and insight. These classes teach methods for cultivating mindful awareness step-by-step, and for sharing our observations with each other. Participants are guided through experiential exercises, moving from the head to the whole self and growing a deeper connection to their emotions and spirit.

Our sanctuary is never more beautiful than at night, lit only by candlelight. This is a deeply peaceful, silent meditation. Enjoy the quiet darkness surrounded by fellow meditators and illuminated by candlelight. This event happens on Friday evenings – a wonderful way to ease gently out of the work week and begin the weekend gently.

The half-day session covers the foundations of Christian meditation: Mindfulness, Prayer, Light, Blessing and Soul. After the class, you’ll have the tools to begin or deepen your meditation path. It’s not about how long you sit. Well, sometimes it is. Insights from a 60 minute meditation are different than the insights from a 20 or 30 minute meditation. And insights from a 2 hour or 3 hour meditation are different still. These sessions are an opportunity to extend yourself and extend your practice.

The Pali word Kusala can be translated as skillful, wholesome or beneficial – aspects by which you could measure a “good” life. These classes explore Buddhist philosophy regarding skillful thoughts, wholesome words and beneficial actions. Through simple yet profound inquiry we can uncover old habits and inherited beliefs that appear helpful but my be holding us back on our spiritual journey.

Labyrinth Meditation

Walking a labyrinth (with your feet or with your fingers) is a more active meditative practice. If you find yourself too restless to sit still to meditate, the labyrinth can be a way to channel your energy and allow your mind to quiet. We’ll discuss the history of labyrinths, and engage in a walking meditations. Join us as we explore this ancient tool of meditation!

Liminal: Healing through Dramatic Art for Cancer Survivors

Liminal is a term that applies to those uncertain times when we stand in the threshold between the “old” which may no longer work and the “new” which is not yet clear. As cancer survivors we often find ourselves in the Liminal Space, held between a definition of self before cancer and the realities of living after. This transition can be an emotionally turbulent time. Liminal is an opportunity for cancer survivors to commune with one another and put our bodies, minds and hearts into the collective space to enable healing and transformation.

Raja Yoga: An Exploration of Yoga Scriptures

Based on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, these classes explore meditation, personal action and divine grace as a path to experiencing our true nature. These classes do not involve asanas (yoga postures). Taught in the Socratic Method of critical questioning, these session focus on the sutras most applicable to everyday life. Each class will begin and end with meditation, and in-between will be lively conversation where students are encouraged to share their insights, confusions, observations and experiences. Prior experience of Yoga or the Yoga Sutras is not required.

Using yogic spiritual teachings and a methodology called the Eight-Limbed Path, this class explores "pain" as it relates to spiritual seeking; what "pain" is offering, how it can be approached, what can be learned from it. And if nothing else, learn a quick and simple way to get out of mental pain!

Thursday Insight Meditation Sitting (TIMS)

This group gathers together each week to practice mindfulness meditation (Vipassana) as a community. Though its focus is on the Theravadan tradition of Buddhism, all are welcome regardless of spiritual and religious affiliations. The format is simple: a 30 min. silent meditation followed by a 30-45 min. talk and discussion.

Walking Meditation - No Need to Arrive: Walking Meditation for Everyday Living

"Every path, every street in the world is your walking meditation path." -Thich Nhat Hanh. There are few things we do more often in life than walk, so one of the single most powerful and nourishing practices we can adopt is to incorporate mindfulness meditation with walking. Becoming familiar with a few basic practices allows us to be comfortable and confident doing walking meditation anywhere in nearly any circumstances.

Zen Meditation

Every Tuesday at 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Every Friday at 6:00am - 7:00am.

Learn “zazen,” the foundational meditation practice of Zen Buddhism. Zazen is the heart of Zen practice – the full expression of our inherent enlightenment as well as the means of uncovering it. Zazen can take place in stillness (sitting meditation) and in activities such as walking meditation and work practice. These sessions are hosted by the Zen Center of Denver, associated with the Diamond Sangha, an international affiliation in the Harada-Yasutani line of Zen Buddhism taught and transmitted by Robert Aitken.
