Learning Meditation at Mayu
If you like a group setting, enjoy a wide range of offerings, and have a flexible schedule,
meditation classes will be a good fit for you.
Learning teachings and techniques in person with other students is a great way to get started. The majority of classes on our calendar are appropriate for beginners. Most classes include periods of instruction combined with a guided meditation, and many incorporate group discussion and Q&A as well.
Beginning classes and workshops range from 1 hour to 3 hours, though only a portion of this time will be spent in formal meditation. The rest of the time is devoted to teaching a particular meditation philosophy or explaining a particular technique.
Some classes take place weekly, monthly, or quarterly, and others may be a 3-week series or a 6-month program. The instructors at Mayu decide for themselves the format of their classes, as well as the pricing. You'll want to read the descriptions of each class on our Meetup calendar carefully.
The teachers at Mayu come from a wide range of traditions and backgrounds. By attending several different classes you'll come to find which instructors and which practices resonate most with you.
If you want your meditation instruction to focus on a specific personal concern, if your schedule is strict
or if you cannot come to Mayu Sanctuary, private lessons are a good option.
If you prefer more personalized meditation instruction you might opt for a private lesson. Many of our class instructors are happy to tailor a single session or series of sessions for your individual needs.
Private lessons can be helpful when you're looking for guidance to address a specific situation such as illness, divorce, grief, anger, etc... Challenging and charged emotions can be met with profound care and attention by meditation instructors who specialize in particular areas of difficulty.
Private instruction can take place at a teacher's office, at your home, at a separate location or at Mayu. These lessons are more expensive than classes due to their personalized approach. Each teacher has different specialties and different rates which can be found on our Private Instruction page.
If you're a self-starter and are looking for the most affordable way to learn
meditation on your own timeframe, drop-in meditation is a wonderful choice.
Mayu's drop-in meditation is a unique way to receive meditation teachings and listen to guided meditations on your own schedule. Our sanctuary is open for drop-in meditation Monday through Thursday 10am - 7pm and Friday & Saturday 10am - 5pm. During these hours you can stay for 15 minutes or the entire day. Average visits last 1 to 2 hours.
Any silent, respecftul activity is welcome during drop-in hours (prayer, meditation, reading, journaling) though the majority of visitors use our iPods and headphones to listen to a selection of hundreds of guided meditations and meditation teachings. You could choose a 5 minute guided meditation focusing on the breath, a 15 minute teaching about mindful parenting, a 25 minute guided meditation for working with anger, or a soothing music album, to name just a few.
Our iPod selections feature some of the best teachers in the world, including Eckhart Tolle, Pema Chodron, Thich Nhat Hanh, Andrew Weil, Rick Hanson, Sally Kempton, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Sharon Salzberg, and dozens more. Have you been introduced to a teacher from a book, video or a friend? Download their teachings onto your own iPod and bring it in. There's no right or wrong way to listen to a meditation!
Drop-in meditation is available for co-op members of Mayu. You can become a Supporting member for as little as a one-time payment of $10. Supporting members pay for drop-in sessions by contributing a donation of their choice ($5 - $10 is average). For members who use the center frequently Full Membership gives you a year of free, unlimited drop-in services. You can read more about co-op membership here.
