Beginning Japanese

Community gatherings for discussions on illness, dying, grief, and living with purpose. We take the discomfort out of these critically important conversations, so that we all can learn, question, debate, and evolve into a more skillful society regarding life's inevitables.

While Buddhism is classified as a religion, many recognize that the time-honored Buddhist teachings are more about a way of life than a religion. There is no deity in Buddhism, so it can be easily integrated into your life, whether you are practicing another religion or not.

The Buddha's life was all about compassion and looking at ways to decrease suffering in our selves and in the world. The focus on mindfulness, loving kindness, and creating true peace—beginning with ourselves—has made a sweet difference in many people's lives, and can make a difference in our world at large.

Come learn about Buddhist teachings and practices in a relaxed and open environment. Val Stepien has been studying Buddhism for many years and was ordained in Thich Nhat Hanh's lineage (the United Buddhist Church) in 2011.

Cards from the Heart

Bring your compassionate and creative spirit for a few hours of crafting Remembrance Cards. All supplies provided but you can bring embellishing items that inspire you. Cards will be mailed to families on the yearly anniversary of their loss. Come spend time in the company of like-minded friends enjoying a creative outlet, and making items that will touch the hearts of those in difficulty.

Caregiver Timeout

Deep Listening: The Art of Conscious Communication

Communication is one of the most essential aspects of our being. It influences our health, work and relationships. Sometimes our thoughts, words and actions get in the way of what we really want. Identifying the blocks can lead us to make new choices.

We have access to our own unique inner wisdom if we listen deeply. Listening to our inner voice and expressing ourselves from that guidance can turn our stumbling blocks to stepping stones and create more of what we want.

Intro to Zen

A three hour introduction to Zen meditation including instruction and practice of Zazen (zen meditation) and kinhin (walking meditation).

Karin Ryuku Kempe Sensei has been practicing Zen since 1971, beginning at the Rochester Zen Center with Philip Kapleau Roshi and then with Toni Packer. She also studied with Shishin Wick Roshi, dharma heir of Taizan Maezumi Roshi, at the Great Mountain Zen Center, completing Jukai with him in 1997. Karin completed her koan training in 2005 with Danan Henry Roshi. She received dharma transmission in 2010 and is one of the three spiritual directors of the Zen Center of Denver.

Japa Mala & Guided Meditation

Japa Mala is a form of meditation that utilizes the mala (prayer beads) to focus one's mind while silently repeating a mantra (sacred words,) thus helping to calm the mind and raise consciousness.

These sessions include a 20 min. period of Japa Mala with the mantra of your choice, followed by a 20 min. recorded guided meditation by Shree Swami Vishwananda Premavatara. Also, included is an introduction to The Mantra Project.

Guidance is available for japa mala, if needed. Bring your own Mala or Rosary (malas are available for sale at Mayu).

Cost: $5-$10 donation is welcome to cover the classroom rental fee, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

These three classes will offer mindfulness practices to help parents reduce stress and connect with their children by promoting joy and love as well as awareness and compassion. Current research in neuroscience will support our exploration of how mindfulness can improve life for ourselves and for our families. Know Pain, Know Gain

Understanding how pain works, in addition to meditation, has been shown to reduce pain and improve function. Whether we are experiencing pain today, or have in the past, we are all know its varying effects - and the effects of pain can range from mildly annoying to constant, crippling, and significantly affect your preferred lifestyle.

This course will give an overview of how acute and chronic pain works, in an easy to understand fashion that is based upon scientific information. You'll be shown strategies and practical exercises to help you put it into practice right away… so you can leave feeling better than when you came.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) approach teaches stress reduction and pain management through the practices of meditation and yoga. Participants uncover their current reactions to stress that keep them trapped in pain, depression and anxiety. Within an environment of patience, acceptance and curiosity, participants discover new approaches to manage their reactions to daily adversities.

OM Healing Circle

OM Healing is an ancient group healing technique brought back in our time by the Grace of Mahavatar Kriya Babaji through his Direct Disciple, Shree Swami Vishwananda Premavatara, to help restore balance and unity in our world. More than 500 OM Healing groups worldwide come regularly together to chant the Cosmic Sound OM as a healing support for Mother Earth, for themselves and the whole of humanity. Like waves created by a stone thrown into water, the vibrations of the Cosmic Sound OM ripple into the surroundings. These vibrations can be beneficial to the participants and, also, reach other people, places and life situations.

Please wear comfortable clothes, since this is a practice normally done in padmasana (cross-legged sitting), or in a chair if needed. Also, be aware that once the circle is formed and chanting has begun, one cannot break the circle to enter, but may join by sitting in the classroom OUTSIDE THE CIRCLE and still derive full benefit.

These classes will provide an introduction to Mind-Body-Spirit Medicine. You will learn how powerful the mind-body-spirit connection is in creating health and in healing disease. The class will begin with self assessments to create insight and awareness into where you are right now. We will then move to learning self-care techniques including guided imagery, the Relaxation Response and HeartMath techniques, aromatherapy, music, and restorative yoga.

The benefits of these self-care techniques include: improvement in your quality of life, decrease in blood pressure, and decrease in anxiety. They also promote healing and enhance immune function.
